
In 2002, two hectares of land at Barrow Hills was officially designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This “sand pit” was given funds to support volunteers carry out the work. Site clearance was started in 1997, and now it is a popular destination for walkers. The bluebells in spring form a beautiful carpet which attract many to our village.
The soil is a mixture of glacial sand with clay nodules. The developing tree layer contains trees such as oak sycamore and maple. The shrub layer includes gorse, buckthorn, privet and bramble. The ground layer has vipers bugloss, basil, thyme and thyme leaved sandwort amongst other plants.
